Minutes ago, the U.S. Senate voted down the Manchin-Toomey amendment, which would have expanded criminal background checks to prevent gun violence and save lives.
This is an insult to the 90 people killed by gun violence every day and the nine-in-ten Americans who support expanded background checks.
The Senate failed to pass something that would undoubtedly make our nation safer. But the fight does not end here.
The Brady Campaign will continue to demand better — and I hope you will, too.
Please call the following U.S. Senators who voted against background checks
Tell them that we deserve better
The vast majority of Americans believe that felons, domestic abusers, and the dangerously mentally ill should not be able to buy guns without a background check, no questions asked.
We deserve better than the Senate vote we saw today.
It is unfathomable that a Senator could sit across the table from a Newtown parent who lost a child, and then vote against this amendment.
We will not give up this fight, and we will not lose sight of the progress we have made. That we have come this far only strengthens our resolve to make the American public heard.
We will also work to make sure that those Senators who refuse to represent the will of the overwhelming majority of Americans on this crucial issue are replaced with others who will.
Thank you for every call, e-mail, letter and personal meeting with elected officials — especially in the wake of the horrific tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School last December.
Your voice made a difference, and I promise you that we are not done.
Sincerely,

Dan Gross, President
Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence
