IGNORANCE and a very effective propaganda campaign by ranchers has lead to the tragic and environmentally unsound legalization of wolf hunting throughout the Rockies as well as Minnesota and Wisconsin. EarthJustice, the NRDC, Defenders of Wildlife and many other environmental groups are fighting the federal and state governments to protect the wolves in the Rockies and northern states in a campaign to restore the health of the ecosystems in these areas and wolves are a vital part of this restoration. It's a bad day to be a gray wolf in Wyoming, which today begins its first wolf-hunting season in more than half a century. It's one of three states—the other two are Minnesota and Wisconsin—that will offer hunts for the first time in decades this fall. Two more states—Idaho and Montana—will offer wolf hunts this year for the third time since 2009.
The red dots on the map below represent wolves in the United States—a grand total of more than 5,000 in the lower 48 and 11,200 in Alaska (where wolves have never been protected). Multiple dots in one state show approximate locations of wolves; in states with only one dot, only statewide information was available.

Click this link to go to the article and view the map http://www.motherjones.com/environment/2012/09/map-which-states-hunt-wolves In some states, there are two population numbers: "Observed population" refers to wolves that wildlife officials have physically seen and documented, while "estimated population" is an extrapolation, a guess at the total number of wolves believed to exist. (Wolves can be quite elusive and their territories can span hundreds of miles, so it's not always possible to track all of them.)
In the 1800s, hunters drove the gray wolf to the brink of extinction in the lower 48, and it wasn't until the 1930s and '40s that states began to outlaw the practice. Federal and state endangered species acts helped wolf populations slowly rebound, and in the past several years, the species has been delisted in several states.

Today, wolves are possibly the most politicized animal in the United States. Many ranchers fiercely oppose protection programs—understandable, since wolves are a very real threat to their cattle and sheep. Conservation groups, on the other hand, point to wolves' important ecological role: Without predators, entire ecosystems can be thrown out of balance.

It's been a tumultuous few years for wolves in the northern Rockies. In 2009, Idaho and Montana offered the first wolf-hunting seasons in decades. Then, in 2010, conservation groups won a federal case that restored protection for wolves in those states. In 2011, though, Congress once again delisted the wolves and allowed the hunts to continue. Hunts in Idaho and Montana killed 545 wolves last year.

Save Wolves Under Siege, Stop the Congressional Attack on Endangered Wolves 10FEB11

IGNORANCE, not science, is driving this campaign to remove wolves from the Endangered Species list. Politicians from the West and Rocky Mountain states are using fear and propaganda to manipulate public opinion and the views of fellow members of Congress, but they are not using the scientific facts about wolves in the lower 48. PLEASE join the NRDC and other environmental organizations and tell your Senators and Representative to vote against any bill that includes removing federal protection for wolves. 		SPEAK OUT FOR WOLVES NOW! Over the next critical weeks, Congress could strip wolves of federal protection, leaving them at the mercy of states that want to kill hundreds of them. Send a message to your senators and representative right now -- for the sake of wolf survival! Anti-wolf lawmakers are wasting no time in the new Congress. They have introduced bills in both the House and the Senate that would strip wolves of their endangered species protection, leaving them at the mercy of states that plan to kill hundreds of them. Tell your senators and representative to oppose this senseless assault on an endangered species. These bills are a blatant attempt to bypass court orders and good science, which say that wolves should remain on the Endangered Species List, protected from mass killing, until they’re fully recovered. Any of these anti-wolf bills could be attached to a spending bill and passed within the next month -- with support from both sides of the aisle. Do NOT assume that your representative and senators will defend wolves because they are pro-wildlife or pro-environment. Many lawmakers will be under tremendous pressure to abandon wolves if it comes down to a vote on a spending bill. Tell all three of your lawmakers not to sacrifice wolves to state control and widespread killing. Congress has never before removed an animal from the Endangered Species List. Doing so now will not only lead to the slaughter of hundreds of wolves, it will set a terrible precedent by replacing scientific judgment with political calculation -- undermining the very basis of the Endangered Species Act. The return of wolves to Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies is one of America’s greatest conservation success stories. Don’t let Congress turn that success into slaughter.
