On Tuesday night, Jon Stewart took on Florida Gov. Rick Scott
for recent attempts to tackle the sweeping epidemic known as voter
fraud. Surely, Stewart said, this so-called purge can’t possibly be
specifically putting minorities at a disadvantage. …right?Oh, sure, Stewart said, people who live in fear of deportation are so likely to go out and vote. But anyway, this effort can’t possibly have any unintended consequences, he said, pointing to a report that said it disproportionately targets Hispanics and a Democratic-leaning and Independent voters. Exactly. No unintended consequences.
It even targets the newly registered by requiring that voter registration forms be returned within 48 hours of filling them out. An awfully specific number — which, naturally calls for an investigation, via Jon Oliver. Turns out, a lot of mischievous things can go on with a voter registration form if left alone for longer than that period of time. Cue a “hell-bounder bender” in which Oliver’s registration form finds itself at a party — between two girls — and…around the neck of a goat.
Well then. It all makes sense now.
