White House says U.S. won’t return Statue of Liberty to France

The White House has dismissed a French politician’s symbolic call for the return of the Statue of Liberty — a gift from France some 140 years ago — on the grounds that the United States no longer represents the values embodied by the monument.

President Donald Trump would “absolutely not” return the statue, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Monday when asked about the comments from Raphaël Glucksmann, a member of the European Parliament.

“My advice to that unnamed low-level French politician would be to remind them that it’s only because of the United States of America that the French are not speaking German right now,” Leavitt said, referring to the U.S. role in helping France during World War II. “So they should be very grateful to our great country.”

The United States played a major role in freeing France from four years of occupation by Nazi Germany, but it did not act alone. On June 6, 1944, Allied forces — primarily American, British and Canadian troops — launched the pivotal D-Day invasion, which marked the beginning of France’s liberation.

Glucksmann, from France’s center-left Place Publique party, made the quip about the Statue of Liberty during a party convention Sunday.

“We are going to tell the Americans — those who have chosen to side with tyrants, those who fire researchers for exercising scientific freedom — we are going to tell them two things. First of all, give us back the Statue of Liberty!” he said.

“We gave it to you as a gift, but apparently, you despise it. So let it be here with us,” he added.

Glucksmann, a vocal advocate for Ukraine’s defense in its war against Russia, has previously accused European leaders of not providing sufficient support to Kyiv.

In his comments Sunday, he was also critical of the Trump administration’s gutting of federal assistance to U.S. research institutes. Earlier this month, France’s minister for higher education and research urged institutions in the country to welcome researchers affected by Trump’s cuts in the United States.

Julian Jackson, an emeritus professor of modern French history at Queen Mary University of London, called Glucksmann a respected and articulate leader. “And the Statue of Liberty is of course a reminder that America partly owes her independence to the French, as in the War of Independence,” he said in an email.

France provided arms, ammunition, troops and naval support to the American colonies during the Revolutionary War.

The Statue of Liberty, a prominent symbol of freedom and hope, draws millions of visitors every year. It was first imagined by Édouard de Laboulaye of France, an ardent admirer of the United States, as a gift to commemorate the centennial of the Declaration of Independence and the abolition of slavery.

Sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi designed the statue to capture those values: a crown representing light, an inscription noting the date of American independence and a broken shackle and chains to mark the end of slavery. The completed statue was disassembled and shipped to New York in 1885, while the plaque with the famous Emma Lazarus poem was added in 1903.

In a social media thread late Monday, Glucksmann responded to Leavitt by acknowledging the heroism of the “hundreds of thousands of young Americans” who landed on the beaches of Normandy while casting the Trump administration’s stance on Ukraine as a betrayal of the war-battered country and the United States’ European allies.

Europe has been alarmed by Trump’s embrace of Russian President Vladimir Putin and struggled to adapt to Washington’s wavering support for Ukraine. Trump and Putin will speak by phone Tuesday to discuss ending the war in Ukraine, according to the Kremlin.

“No one, of course, will come and steal the Statue of Liberty. The statue is yours. But what it embodies belongs to everyone,” Glucksmann wrote. “And if the free world no longer interests your government, then we will take up the torch, here in Europe.”

Dr. Seuss created a number of biting political cartoons during WWII, including a cartoon criticizing American indifference to the deaths of foreign children.

In mid-2015, global debate raged over an increasingly large exodus from Syria, while the terror attacks in Paris on 13 November 2015 exacerbated tensions about matter of asylum seekers across the world.

Articles that were popular on social media in the wake of those attacks in Paris included some pertaining to similar events in U.S. and world history. One prominent rumor accurately held that Anne Frank was one of many Jewish children denied entry to the United States in the early stages of World War II, and as a result she (like others) died in the Holocaust. Another surprisingly relevant claim involved the sentiment of Americans toward to European refugees in 1938, with the vast majority of the former (80 percent) unmoved by their plight and disapproving of their migration to the U.S. to escape Hitler’s growing reach.

Another popular rumor was that iconic children’s author and illustrator Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel) had espoused surprisingly strong positions on the isolationist political climate in the United States as World War II began. Among Seuss’ putative works was the above-reproduced cartoon, eerily applicable to the Syrian refugee crisis of 2015. In that cartoon, a self-satisfied mother wearing a sweater bearing the legend “America First” reads a book called “Adolf the Wolf” to two horrified, saucer-eyed children, telling the youngsters the story of how “the wolf chewed up the children and spit out their bones … But those were Foreign Children, and it didn’t really matter”:

Seuss’ catalog of political cartoons is a well-documented (if infrequently referenced) aspect of his long career. The 1999 book Dr. Seuss Goes to War: The World War II Editorial Cartoons of Theodor Seuss Geisel focuses on this period of Seuss’ work, of which a 2013 Atlantic article reported:

Seuss’ outrage may have had something to do with his background. German was spoken in his childhood home, and between the two wars he traveled and studied in Europe. His intimate knowledge of the continent, combined with his left-leaning politics, made Nazism especially horrifying to him. “I think he was also teased for his German heritage as a child,” [Judith] Morgan, ]coauthor of the book Dr. Seuss and Mr. Geisel] said. “So he may have wanted to prove how strongly he felt about America.”

In Geisel’s political cartoons, Hitler showed up as a villain in many forms: a mad scientist amputating limbs, a bureaucrat giving orders to the devil, a trophy hunter trying to add a Russian bear to his taxidermy collection. In contrast, Mussolini was depicted as a bumbling idiot. In one of Geisel’s cartoons, the Italian dictator furiously pedals a motorbike with tank treads. “Yoo hoo, Adolf!” he calls out in the direction of Russia. “Lookee! I’m attacking ’em, too!” But his bike is tied to a post.

Later in life, Geisel admitted that many of his political cartoons were “hurriedly and embarrassingly drawn” and “full of many snap judgments.” That was never more true than when he focused on the Japanese. Instead of mocking their leader, as he did with Germany and Italy, Geisel ridiculed the Japanese people, drawing them as grinning menaces, stray cats, and slithering worms.

He even took on Japanese Americans — a puzzling move for a grandchild of four German immigrants. One of Geisel’s cartoons shows a cheerful line of slant-eyed people marching down the West Coast, picking up blocks of TNT and looking out over the Pacific for a “signal from home.” It appeared in print on February 13, 1942, just six days before Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the order that sent more than 110,000 Japanese Americans to internment camps.

The Library at the University of California, San Diego hosts a complete collection of Seuss’ wartime political pieces under the following description:

Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel, 1904-1991) was a life-long cartoonist: in high school in Springfield, Massachusetts; in college at Dartmouth (Class of 1925); as an adman in New York City before World War II; in his many children’s books, beginning with To Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street (1937). Because of the fame of his children’s books (and because we often misunderstand these books) and because his political cartoons have remained largely unknown, we do not think of Dr. Seuss as a political cartoonist. But for two years, 1941-1943, he was the chief editorial cartoonist for the New York newspaper PM (1940-1948), and for that journal he drew over 400 editorial cartoons.

As that collection’s introduction noted, Seuss primarily created his political works for a New York newspaper between 1941 and 1943 (and not for child readers). The cartoon reproduced above was included in that collection with the following captioning:

It's not so much an optional activity as a hallowed tradition when my colleagues convene for a Friday afternoon beer. It's time to put into practice what may as well be Hamburg's official motto: work hard, then play harder. And so we find ourselves standing before one of the colossal concrete flak bunkers that still loom over the city. An unusual choice of venue, but one that certainly provides plenty of food for thought over a beer.
The entrance is uninviting. The path meanders through clammy corridors that once echoed with rushed footsteps as air raid sirens howled across the city, and the cold light of electric bulbs on bare concrete walls quickly induces claustrophobia. We stepped in from a chilly October afternoon, yet it actually seems to be colder inside as we crowd into the elevator.
We emerge on the top floor, surprised to find a sleek rooftop bar that now stands where the massive anti-aircraft guns once did. We seem to have beaten the Friday rush and have an unbeatable view of the city to ourselves as the waitress plants chilled glasses of Astra on the table in front of us. The name of this cult lager can be found everywhere here, whether stacked in stubby bottles on supermarket shelves, atop a sticky counter in a seedy bar on the Reeperbahn, or in the neon glare of a sign hanging off a pub wall. If any beer can be said to represent Hamburg, then this is surely it.

The venue for today's session is more remarkable than our brew of choice, however. If Astra epitomizes the spirit of Hamburg, then so, too, does the old bunker in which we are now enthusiastically swilling it. Once used to repel Allied bombers in the World War II, it was later left standing as a crumbling and overgrown ruin after a botched demolition. Sixty years later, developers embarked on an ambitious project to transform it into a solar-power station and renamed it the Energiebunker. Photovoltaic panels now cascade down the southern wall and the stripped-out interior has been filled with machinery to harness the green energy.
"This kind of pragmatism is typical of Hamburg," one colleague tells me with more than a hint of local pride. In fact, there is a track record of taking a pragmatic approach to the bunkers in Hamburg, where these unlikely contenders for beloved landmarks have found a new lease on life as apartments, restaurants, bars, music studios, and outdoor climbing centers. There are even plans to construct a modern interpretation of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon on top of the other remaining flak bunker in order to "alienate" it from its original purpose and create more valuable green space.
Civic initiatives have transformed these wartime relics into symbols of a thriving contemporary culture. Where else but Hamburg can you go to a poetry slam in a flak bunker or eat Portuguese food in a converted air raid shelter? Taking the leftovers of a reviled regime and putting them to good use makes a clear statement about the liberal Germany of today. It isn't possible to rewrite painful history, but Hamburg can certainly teach us about coming to terms with it.
As I sit -- beer in hand -- I feel that this is something worth drinking to.
