Hasan Piker reacted with disbelief after a photograph of him in his underwear appeared on giant screens at the Republican National Committee's midterm convention.
"What the f***?" the left-wing streamer said as he watched footage from the event during a livestream.
"Nooo!" he added while laughing. "They f****** posted the meat pic! Nooo! Yo! They posted the meat pic at the f****** Trumpalooza!"
The photograph appeared briefly in a video shown at the opening day of the Republican Midterm Convention in Dallas. Footage from inside the arena showed the image displayed behind the stage on Wednesday.
The unusual cameo came as Republicans increasingly seek to portray Piker, a self-described socialist with a large online following, as representative of the Democratic Party's left flank ahead of November's midterm elections.
The Dallas gathering is a two-day "special ceremonial convention," rather than a traditional presidential nominating convention. According to the Republican National Committee (RNC), it was organized to celebrate President Donald Trump's accomplishments and rally Republicans around a shared vision before the midterms. Official documentation specifies that delegates cannot conduct formal party business, adopt resolutions or hold elections during the event.
Newsweek has contacted the RNC and representatives for Piker for comment via email outside normal working hours.
Why Republicans Held a Midterm Convention
National party conventions are normally reserved for presidential election years. The Dallas gathering was designed to give Republicans a similar national platform before the midterms, when the party must defend narrow majorities in the House and Senate without Trump's name appearing on the ballot.
The event combined elements of a Trump rally, campaign showcase and fundraiser, with more than 50 administration officials, lawmakers and candidates scheduled to appear. Republicans are using the event to promote the administration's record, elevate candidates in competitive races and motivate voters in a year when the president's party would typically lose congressional seats.
Piker joked that showing the photograph was going to turn Texas blue, saying, "They're trying to make Blexas happen," referring to the prospect of the traditionally Republican state voting Democratic.
Why Hasan Piker Has Become a Political Flash Point
Piker has become a prominent figure in Republican messaging ahead of the midterm elections, with the party seeking to cast the streamer as an influential voice within a Democratic Party moving further to the left.
Republicans have highlighted his appearances with progressive candidates and repeatedly resurfaced statements he has made about the United States, Israel and the September 11 attacks. The RNC has described Piker as Democrats' "America-hating spokesman" and used his association with Michigan Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed to portray the candidate—and the wider party—as extreme. The RNC has repeatedly pressed El-Sayed to sever ties with the streamer.
Piker does not hold a formal position in the Democratic Party and frequently criticizes its leadership from the left. However, his large following among younger voters and appearances alongside Democratic candidates have made him a useful political symbol for Republicans seeking to tie the party's nominees to socialism and certain online rhetoric.
In an August 20 livestream, Piker said, "If Jews in America keep putting this idea out there that they are singularly invested in Israel, eventually someone is going to come around and take action, not against the state of Israel, mind you, but against American Jews."
Democratic leaders and lawmakers—including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senators Jon Ossoff of Georgia, Cory Booker of New Jersey and Jacky Rosen of Nevada—subsequently condemned the remarks, rejecting the suggestion that political advocacy could make Jewish Americans responsible for violence against them.
Ossoff's spokesperson described such rhetoric as "reckless and dangerous," adding, "American Jews and all Americans must have the freedom and security to speak out and petition their government without fear of reprisal."
