HR 1585 VAWA; Will Rep jennifer wexton D VA do the right thing or is she no different than barbara comstock? 11MAR19

MORE and more I am getting the impression Rep jennifer wexton DF* VA is no different and no better than barbara comstock. wexton is not cosponsoring HR 1384 Medicare For All Act of 2019 because she feels it is too expensive for the country ( but you can bet she will support funding for the bloated military-industrial complex budget to keep the war profiteers happy ). She and her congressional House staff do not mind having the American taxpayers pay for their heath insurance through the Affordable Care Act but feel no responsibility to make sure all Americans have access to health insurance without having to worry about the cost of treatment and medication. If it is true that comstock did not get her health insurance through the ACA ( I was told one time she was covered by her husband's insurance  ) then on the issue of healthcare wexton is the hypocrite.

Women and Progressives are advocating for the U.S. House to pass HR 1585 the  Re authorization of The Violence Against Women Act of 1994, legislation that expired during the last government shutdown. wexton is not a cosponsor of this re authorization bill introduced by Rep Karen Bass D CA on 7 MAR 19. I called your D.C. office and was told HR 1585 has not been discussed in your office and it is unknown if you will become a cosponsor and / or will vote for this legislation. REALLY?!?!?!???? Another example of you waiting to be told what to do by the House Democratic Party leadership, that has to be what is happening because what could be wrong with this legislation protecting women, this legislation that has been passed multiple times but you can not decide on your own to support it?  Even after sending out this tweet on International Women's Day that now makes you seem so hypocritical?

Trump's government shutdown shamefully allowed the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) to lapse. Last Thursday, the bipartisan legislation was reintroduced--and it's up to all of us to make sure it passes.

VAWA has provided funding for life-saving services for survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking as well as efforts to prevent this violence for the past 24 years.¹ 

 

VAWA has always passed with overwhelming bipartisan support--but some extreme conservatives in Congress are balking at efforts to expand the bill to provide needed support to Native American women, undocumented immigrants, and LGBTQ people.² 

 

Craig, we need to make sure each and every U.S. Representative knows that their constituents support survivors, and a strengthened Violence Against Women Act. The bill was just introduced last Thursday and having a slew of representatives sign on immediately will show huge momentum. Will you speak out for women and survivors and call your representative, Jennifer Wexton, today?

H.R.1384 - To establish an improved Medicare for All national health insurance program 27FEB19

I just called the D.C. office of my representative, Rep Jennifer Wexton D VA as she is not a cosponsor of H.R. 1384 Medicare For All Act of 2019 though she may be receiving, or at least has access to healthcare insurance, at taxpayer expense. Rep Don Beyer Jr D VA and Rep Robert "Bobby" Scott D VA  are original cosponsors of this legislation, signing on the day Rep Jayapal Pramila D WA introduced it to the US House, 27 FEB 19. The staffer in Rep Wexton's office I spoke with had never heard of Carrie Ann Lucas, was not aware she died because she was denied antibiotics by united healthcare due to corporate greed and Medicaid budget cuts. I made it very clear that I expect Rep Wexton to support and vote for H.R. 1384 without waiting to be told by the Democratic Party leadership it is OK for her to do so. I called your D.C. office and now am e mailing you to tell you to actively support H.R. 1384 Medicare For All Act of 2019 and to vote for the act when it comes before any committee you may be assigned to and to the House floor. You should already be a cosponsor of this legislation, the fact that you are not while you do have healthcare insurance, or at least access to it at taxpayer expense, is disturbing. You should not be supporting corporate greed and class warfare, nor should you be waiting for the Democratic Party leadership to tell you to support this legislation or not.  Healthcare is a right, not a privilege, I did not think you would need to be reminded of that.

Disgustingly, united healthcare chose their profit margin over the life of Carrie Ann Lucas so she died on Sunday, 24 FEB 19 due to multiple medical complications as a result of their decision to deny her coverage for an antibiotic prescription last year. You may not have heard about Carrie Ann's death since the news media has been ignoring everything else to report on michael cohen's congressional testimony and (NOT MY) pres drumpf's / trump's - kim jong-un's summit failure in Hanoi. YOU can go to united united healthcare's facebook page and post a condemnation of their corporate greed that resulted in Carrie Ann's death ( I did) and take the time to e mail your representative and senators ( I did) about Carrie Ann's death and telling them you expect them to support and vote for H.R. 1384 Medicare For All Act of 2019 because HEALTHCARE IS A RIGHT NOT A PRIVILEGE. Noted Disability Rights Activist Dies After Being Denied Medication

And a prominent disability rights activist and attorney died this past Sunday after being refused an essential medication by her insurance company. Carrie Ann Lucas, who had a rare form of muscular dystrophy, helped pass legislation in Colorado to protect parents with disabilities from child welfare discrimination. In 2017, Lucas was arrested with several others after protesting Medicaid budget cuts with a 58-hour sit-in at Senator Cory Gardner’s office. According to a message on Lucas’s Facebook page, United Healthcare denied her coverage for an antibiotic last year, triggering a host of medical complications which led to her death. Carrie Ann Lucas was 47 years old and is survived by her four adopted children, who are also all living with disabilities.

Why is the historic clock tower at Trump's D.C. hotel open and staffed during the shutdown? 6JAN19

WHY? Because this is one of the most corrupt administrations in the history of our representative Republic. And because the American electorate has become so cowardly they will allow this to happen. Electing a Democratically controlled House is not enough. We, the people must e mail our representative and senators and demand this government shutdown be ended without the Mexican border wall funding drumpf / trump-pence are demanding and instead a budget be passed that meets the needs of the people of the nation and begins to restore the American Social Contract....
Why is the historic clock tower at Trump's D.C. hotel open and staffed during the shutdown?

The Trump-McConnell shutdown of the federal government has already shuttered most national offices, with hundreds of thousands of federal workers furloughed or forced to work without pay. In particular, it has wreaked havoc on our national parks, with reports of overflowing human waste, uncollected trash, damage to hiking trails, and even three deaths reported as of yesterday, all due to the lack of policing and supervision. Iconic landmarks and museums on the National Mall have been shuttered or have gone unstaffed, and the American public has been denied access to them.

Yet a single rather obscure historical site has somehow managed to remain open and fully staffed: the clock tower in the federal building that houses the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C.

As reported by the Associated Press:

Smithsonian museums are closed. There are no federal staffers to answer tourists’ questions at the Lincoln Memorial. And across the United States, national parks are cluttered with trash. Yet despite the federal government shutdown, a historic clock tower at the Trump International Hotel remained open Friday for its handful of visitors, staffed by green-clad National Park Service rangers.

The little-known post office clock tower, though included in the National Register of Historic Places, does not receive a great number of visitors, even as it provides guests of the Trump hotel with stellar views of the city.  According to the AP, its ranger staff often outnumbers the tourists.

The Trump administration appears to have gone out of its way to keep the attraction in the federally owned building that houses the Trump hotel open and staffed with National Park Service rangers, even as other federal agencies shut all but the most essential services.

Asked to explain why this particular site was permitted to remain staffed and open while so many more were shut down, a spokeswoman for the General Services Administration contended that the law that put the GSA in charge of the site obligates it to remain open. The spokeswoman also said that the status of the clock tower was “unrelated” to the building’s tenant, even though “Old Post Office” is displayed in gold letters prominently under the Hotel’s logo, as seen in the photograph above. The tower is touted by the hotel as one of the highlights of the property.

This “explanation” rings hollow to at least one watchdog organization:

A watchdog group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the GSA, seeking documents explaining why the tower was open, how it continues to be funded, and any communications between the agency and the Trump Organization, the president’s company. Trump gave up day-to-day management of the firm in 2017 but continues to receive earnings from its operations.

For those who might consider what appears to be yet another example of the Trump excepting himself and his family’s interests from the consequences of his actions a mere minor matter, Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo points out that in the conceivable, but unlikely, event that there is a legitimate reason this particular site remains open, just the appearance of such favoritism would be enough for any other administration to correct the error.

For this one, however, it appears to be simply another case of business as usual:

Assuming it is what it looks like, another example of the federal government being harnessed to the personal finances of the President, it will be just a more minor example of what we’ll learn far more about in the years to come. There is so little transparency in this administration, so much corruption that has become commonplace, that I don’t think we can really even imagine just how deep it all runs.

I have to differ with Josh Marshall on this point. We can most definitely imagine how deep it all runs.
