Now Streaming: Mother Jones Fall Climate Event Series 25OKT25

 

My name is Khary Brown, and I am the Vice President of Media Sales for the Center of Investigative Reporting. In my 20 years of being part of Mother Jones, and now Reveal, I have rarely written to you, our wonderful supporters, but I plan to change that now and in the future.  You may have seen our announcements for the livestreaming of two climate events that CIR and friends hosted in September. Well, I am happy to say both of these events are now live on our YouTube channel.  The Lingering Storm: 20 Years After Katrina—Stories of Hope and Action.  In early September, CIR teamed up with Capital B and the Texas Observer to present “The Lingering Storm,” a two-part event marking two decades since Hurricane Katrina reshaped the Gulf Coast and the nation. Part One focused on communities in action, with former Houston Mayor Bill White, Hip Hop Caucus’ Rev. Lennox Yearwood Jr., and CIR’s very own Marla Jones Newman sharing personal stories from the aftermath of Katrina and how cities like Houston stepped up in a time of crisis. Part Two featured acclaimed journalist Soledad O’Brien (formerly of CNN), Mother Jones video correspondent Garrison Hayes, and Capital B’s climate and environment reporter Adam Mahoney as they reflected on the hurricane’s legacy and how it shaped the national conversation around climate reporting. The panel explored how coverage of environmental disasters has evolved since Katrina, what challenges persist, and how today’s climate crisis continues to affect vulnerable communities across the United States. You can watch this truly impactful full video here.  Building Local to Global Climate Coalitions Powered by Communities  CIR returned to Climate Week NYC this year with our friends from the Climate Reality Project, the SEEC Institute, and the Tishman Environment and Design Center at the New School to present Building Local to Global Climate Coalitions Powered by Communities.  At a time when environmental policy, funding, and research are under assault, we wanted to convene a conversation between grassroots organizations on the frontlines of getting the message to communities and policymakers, philanthropists, and academics nationally. Rep. Kathy Castor (D-Fla.), Cleveland Mayor Justin M. Bibb, Climate Reality Project CEO Phyllis Cuttino, and leaders from as far as Hawaii to the streets of New York City talked about their environmental efforts. It was great to see leaders at every level talking through challenges and what we can do collectively. Meaningful leadership on climate change is unlikely to come from Washington, DC, so it will truly take all of us to enact change.
