Hi again. It’s Al Letson, host of Reveal and More To The Story.
I have to tell you, cryptocurrency still puzzles me. This intangible, under-regulated system of blockchains and meme coins seems to be making a handful of people a lot of money. (Not me.) Still, I’ve never fully wrapped my head around it. And that’s one of the reasons I brought in independent tech journalist Molly White to lay it all out for me.
Molly has been thinking and writing about the many ups and downs of the crypto industry for years, often with a critical eye. She routinely calls out the industry for failing to live up to the promises of offering people a decentralized digital currency that doesn’t rely on the backing of a bank or government. And lately, she’s particularly focused on how crypto has started influencing our elections.
This More To The Story episode comes sandwiched between Reveal’s new two-part series about the epic rise and fall of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX. You might remember a few years ago when FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried was found guilty of fraud after FTX collapsed and billions of dollars worth of crypto vanished. The first episode—"The Secret Story of FTX’s Rise and Ruin Part 1"—just came out. It features exclusive prison conversations with Bankman-Fried and reexamines the company’s bankruptcy, one of the most expensive in US history.
I hope you check out all of our crypto reporting in the Reveal feed on Apple Podcasts or your favorite podcast app.
