FULL SPEECH: Former President Obama Rally Speech 10/19/17 Campaigns for Ralph Northam in Virginia
On November 7th, Virginians will go to the polls for the first statewide election since Trump took office. Every American has a stake in the outcome of our election. Nationally, there is a pathway to flipping Congress and impeaching Trump, and taking back the Virginia House is a key step in that fight. Are you ready to do your part?
Our beloved home state has been at the forefront of the best and worst of our nation’s traditions. Virginia was the birthplace of American democracy and of American slavery. But this election may determine which tradition defines our future. When I stood in the streets of Charlottesville on August 12th, I wondered if I was bearing witness to a new normal, or the last gasp of a dying racist hatred. Then I remembered that the answer is up to us.
No one has made the choice more clear than corporate lobbyist and Republican nominee Ed Gillespie who has embraced a campaign so viciously racist that it would make Jesse Helms blush.
This election is about rejecting a Republican party that demonizes vulnerable refugees while protecting powerful corporations from revealing the chemicals they use in fracking. It is about holding accountable the Republican incumbents who denied Medicaid to 400,000 Virginians while suppressing voting rights for the working class. 54 Democratic challengers, a modern record, have stepped up to run - half are women, a quarter are people of color, and nearly a dozen are millennials. We have a rare generational chance for a House of Delegates that looks like all of Virginia.
Here are some candidates the PCCC is supporting who need your help today:
Justin Fairfax (VA-LT Gov): Justin, an Assistant US Attorney and member of the Northern Virginia Human Trafficking Task Force, has been a powerful advocate for justice reform and a living wage. His opponent, an extreme conservative declared on the campaign trail, “We are going to take back Virginia the way this president is going to take back this country!” Donate $1 to Justin's campaign.
Jennifer Carroll Foy (VA-HD02): Jennifer is running to be the first public defender elected to a State House that’s blocked all attempts to reform our criminal justice system. She was a member of the third class of female cadets at Virginia Military Institute and has dedicated her life and career to public service. Donate $1 to Jennifer’s campaign.
Chris Hurst (VA-HD12): After spending years as a local news anchor giving a voice to people in his community, Chris is running to make sure the New River Valley starts getting the resources and attention it deserves. Making sure schools and hospitals are adequately funded are at the heart of Chris’s campaign because he understands those two things are key to a flourishing community. Donate $1 to Chris’s campaign.
Donte Tanner (VA-HD40): Donte is a small business owner and Air Force Academy graduate who grew up in the Virginia public schools. He’s running against Marco Rubio’s campaign chair Tim Hugo, a delegate who voted to block health care, defund Planned Parenthood, and in favor of the infamous transvaginal ultrasound bill. Donate $1 to Donte’s campaign.
Hala Ayala (VA-HD51): Hala is a first time candidate who organized the Virginia Women’s March and founded the Prince William County chapter of the National Organization for Women. She talks movingly about her experience as a single mother whose family relied on Medicaid, and has made expanding the program the centerpiece of her policy agenda. Donate $1 to Hala’s campaign.
There are 7 additional House of Delegates pickup opportunities in districts that rejected Donald Trump: Peruvian immigrant and union member Elizabeth Guzman (VA-HD31), veteran and small businessman David Reid (VA-HD32), Vietnamese immigrant and PTA mom Kathy Tran (VA-HD42), communications consultant Karrie Delaney (VA-HD67), public school teacher Schuyler VanValkenburg (VA-HD72), School Board member Shelly Simonds (VA-HD94), and journalist and first transgender candidate Danica Roem (VA-HD13).
The PCCC has been a great partner to these bold progressive Virginia candidates, and I’m proud to be working with them win big in Virginia this cycle and make a key step in taking back power for progressives. PCCC has already raised over $90,000 for Virginia candidates this cycle -- can you help cross the $100,000 mark?
Proud to be in this with you.
