various other bars and restaurants they were asking people to clear out
bars and restaurants in the area. Clearly, police are very concerned
about other potential targets," Al Jazeera's Jacky Rowland said.

President Francois Hollande has said a state of emergency would be
declared across France and national borders shut following a spate of
attacks in Paris in which he said dozens were killed.
Hollande said in a brief statement on television on Friday evening that a cabinet meeting had been called.
"A state of emergency will be declared," Hollande said.
"The second measure will be the closure of national borders," he added.
Al Jazeera's
Jacky Rolland, reporting 500 metres where a hostage situation is going
on in Paris, says more than 100 people are reported to be taken hostage
in the Bataclan concert hall in the city.
Police
and firefighters have been moving to the area towards the concert hall,
she said, adding that the number of attackers are still not clear.
The
attackers who entered the hall shouted and "Allahu Akbar" and "This is
Syria" before they started firing their weapons inside the Bataclan
concert hall, she added.
Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch released the following statement on today’s attacks in Paris:
“We stand in solidarity with France, as it has stood with
us so often in the past. This is a devastating attack on our shared
values and we at the Department of Justice will do everything within our
power to assist and work in partnership with our French law enforcement
colleagues.”

“We
are shocked by this new manifestation of maddening, terrorist violence
and hatred which we condemn in the most radical way together with the
Pope and all those who love peace,” Federico Lombardi, head of the Holy
See press office, said in a statement. “We pray for the victims and the
wounded, and for all the French people. This is an attack on peace for
all humanity, and it requires a decisive, supportive response on the
part of all of us as we counter the spread the homicidal hatred in all
of its forms.”
District officials have “deployed additional law enforcement
resources” to high-profile and “French-owned” sites, according to a news
release.
D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser was briefed on Friday’s attacks, the
release stated, and the additional officers were sent “out of an
abundance of caution.”
“There is no imminent threat to the District and MPD will continue to
work with partners and monitor the situation closely,” the release
continued.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Paris and the victims of these horrific acts of violence.
As
the deadly attacks played out around Paris on Friday evening, France’s
ambassador to the United States, Gérard Araud, took to Twitter to slam
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump over a January tweet
on gun control immediately following the Charlie Hebdo terrorist attacks
in the city.
.@realDonaldTrump This message is repugnant in its lack of any human decency. Vulture.
Twitter accounts in multiple languages used the Arabic-language “Paris is burning” hashtag to discuss Friday’s attacks around the city.
Most accounts used the hashtag to decry the attacks, but a small number of accounts used it to praise the attacks.
One account, @turmedia316, said “O crusaders we are coming to you with bombs and rifles. Wait for us.”
“Are you in the affected area? Let your friends know you’re safe.”
As the Paris attacks are unfolding, Facebook has activated its safety
feature, where those in and around Paris can let their Facebook friends
know they are safe.
The social media company previously used this feature during the Nepal earthquake and other major disasters.

Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush was asked about
the Paris attacks during an interview on “The Hugh Hewitt Show,” a
radio program.
Asked whether he was surprised by the attacks, Bush said,
“No, I’m not surprised. This is a war being initiated by Islamic
terrorists. It’s not a law enforcement operation. And the mindset, in
our country at least, needs to change to recognize it for what it is:
This is an organized effort to destroy western civilization. And we need
to lead in this regard. We need to re-garner the alliances, fortify
those alliances, reconnect with our counterintelligence and intelligence
capabilities with our European allies, and engage in the Middle East to
take out ISIS, which is the well-spring, and more likely to be the
well-spring of this type of activity. If it’s not them, there are other
terrorist groups. “
“This is the war of our time and we have to be serious and
engaging in creating a strategy to confront it and take it out,” he
added.

Here’s
the statement from the New York City Police Department, which says it
is deploying officers to “crowded areas around the city out of an
abundance of caution” following the Paris attacks:

activity online, tweeted how a French Web site connected to the Islamic
State appeared to be cheerleading the assault.

Normally
bustling Paris neighborhoods were eerily empty Friday night. Few buses
were in the streets, and the Uber transportation service went off-line.
Cynthia Jandet, 23, and some friends were among the few on the
streets. They were walking back from the Stade de France stadium, where they had been watching a soccer game.
“During the first half, we heard two big explosions, and then a
little one,” Jandet said. But she said the friendly continued, and
spectators were only let out at the end. — Ryan Weber

longer transmitting images of the assault on Bataclan, the concert hall.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon released a statement Friday evening:
The Secretary-General condemns the despicable terrorist
attacks carried out today in various locations in and around Paris. He
demands the immediate release of the numerous individuals reportedly
being held hostage in the Bataclan theatre.
The Secretary-General trusts that the French authorities will do all
in their power to bring the perpetrators to justice quickly.
The Secretary-General extends his deepest condolences to the families
of the victims and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured. He stands

France beat
rival Germany, 2-0, in a friendly Friday night at Paris’s Stade de
France, finishing the game just as shootings and explosions were
reported in the city. Three explosions went off near the stadium, two of
which occurred in the game’s first half and one of which could be heard on the broadcast.
French Prime Minister Francois Hollande, who was in attendance, was
immediately evacuated from the stadium after the first explosion,
however, the game continued.
France scored twice with goals from Olivier Giroud and André-Pierre
Gignac, but the score on this night was inconsequential to the
happenings outside. According to Germany national team coach Joachim
Low, neither he nor his players knew what had happened until the game
was over.
Löw: I just found out at the final whistle about what happened. We are of course all shocked.
Meanwhile, fans were barred from leaving as unrest around the stadium
continued. After the final whistle, spectators were allowed to hunker
down on the field.
The attacks, which at press time were still ongoing, come just hours
after Germany’s national team was evacuated from their hotel due to a
bomb threat, ESPN FC reports.
This is difficult to confirm, but a Facebook user by the name of Benjamin Cazenoves posted
on his account that he was inside the theater, badly injured and that
survivors were being gunned down one by one within the hall where the
band Eagles of Death Metal had been playing.
The
wife of an American musician playing at a concert hall that came under
attack in Paris tells The Washington Post that her husband, drummer
Julian Dorio, and other band members of Eagles of Death Metal are
safe. An unknown number of hostages continue to be held.
“We are just holding our breath and saying prayers for everyone,”
said Dorio’s wife, Emily. The pair only spoke briefly. “He called to say
that he loved me and he was safe. Everyone on stage was able to get
off.”
Some of the main French Metro stations were closed down
Friday night, including the one at Gare du Nord, one of the city’s
principal train stations. … While Paris residents were urged to stay
indoors, hundreds streamed down the Boulevard Magenta waving French
flags, trying to get to the stadium where the shooting occurred, to show
solidarity with the victims.
In
a brief address, French President Francois Hollande declares a national
state of emergency in the wake of the ongoing Paris attacks, and closed

where an unknown number of hostages continue to be held.
Mary Lou Dorio, the mother of Julian Dorio, the drummer for Eagles of
Death Metal, told The Washington Post that her son is safe. She said it
was great news.
She said she spoke to her son’s wife, who said that the band members
had managed to flee the concert hall when the attack began. The fate of
several crew members remains unknown, she said.
“It was awful,” his mother said. She added that her son was at a
local police station, where he was able to call his wife. He had left
his phone on stage.
President
Obama said in a brief news conference Friday that the U.S. was in
contact with French officials, offering condolences to victims’ families
and full support to the investigation. The president said he did not
want to speculate about who might have been behind the attacks.
“This is a heartbreaking situation,” he added.
In the midst of chaos, Parisians have taken to social media with the hashtag #porteouverte, meaning “open door,” to tell anyone who is out on the streets where they can come inside.
Many people have tweeted their personal addresses, offering to open their doors to strangers.

Attacks took place at least three different locations in Paris on Friday.
So far, at least 11 are reported dead in a Le Carillon, a restaurant,
and 15 killed at the Bataclan theater, where there are reports
that hostages were taken.
The explosion took place near the stadium, where two loud noises were
heard to “penetrate the sounds of cheering fans,” according to the Associated Press.

Shootings and explosions in several locations in and around Paris have reportedly left dozens of people dead.
NPR's
Eleanor Beardsely is reporting from Paris that there were three
locations where violence broke out. A shooting took place in front a
restaurant; another happened in a concert hall called the Bataclan,
where, she says, a hostage situation is currently unfolding. The third
was an explosion outside the national stadium, just outside of the city,
where a soccer game between Germany and France was being played. This video appeared to capture the sound of an explosion.
"People are saying that Paris is under attack again," Eleanor said, referring to the terror attack that shook Paris in January.
French
President Francois Hollande addressed the nation, announcing that he
had declared a state of emergency and was closing France's international
borders.
Though Eleanor says little is known about the hostage
situation at the concert hall, she says law enforcement stormed the
venue and they heard gunfire but didn't know where it was coming from.
She says police have locked down the neighborhoods around the two places
in Paris.
She said French TV is getting information from
people on the scene. "Many people were crying and the news channels had
to cut them off because they couldn't have that kind of thing on the air
to panic people because nobody really knows whats going on."
President Obama called the attack "outrageous" and pledged U.S. support to France.
"This
is an attack on all humanity and the universal values we share," Obama
said during his brief remarks. He said it was a "heartbreaking
situation."
Obama also said that the U.S. would help bring
those responsible to justice and "go after any terrorist networks that
go after our people." We will update as more details become
available. When news such as this is breaking, some reports will turn
out to be incorrect. We will focus on accounts from journalists on the
ground and reliable news outlets.
