EGYPT ROCKED BY PROTEST FOR FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY ACROSS THE COUNTRY 27JAN11

UPDATES on the volatile situation in Egypt, protest throughout the country and shootings of protesters in Cairo and Suez.......
I am reading 'Ghost Wars', a fascinating book to be reading while all this is developing in across the Maghreb and Yemen. The chapter I was reading today includes the decision in 1995 to close the American embassy in Khartoum. Included are the thoughts of the then U.S. Ambassador to Sudan, Timothy Carney, and they provide a warning to the U.S. government in relations to the the developments in North Africa and Yemen. Ambassador Carney advocated direct engagement with governments and political organizations. To quote, "The United States could reduce the threat of Islamic radicalism if it learned to interact with Islamist in more sophisticated ways, distinguishing between peaceful movements of religious revival and those bent on violence. Instead it was (is) clinging to alliances in the Middle East with corrupt, failing secular regimes such as Egypt's, which encouraged (encourages) Washington to lump all Islamic political groups into one 'terrorist' camp." The U.S. government has to take a stronger stand supporting democracy activist in the nations of the Maghreb and Yemen. Pres. Obama has to condemn all violence and if the governments of these nations use violence against peaceful protest and violate their citizens human rights as provided for in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with mass arrest, beatings, torture, killings and complete censorship of the media, internet and social networks. Failure of the governments involved to peacefully resolve the grievances of their people should result in the suspension of all U.S. government aid involving said countries military, intelligence and law enforcement agencies. This aid should not be resumed until the government in power adopts the democratic reforms as demanded by the people, or the new government established by a revolution is based on and committed to the demands for true democracy (a work in progress in Tunisia). If the U.S. government continues to play both side of the fence we will end up without any allies in the area, no matter who ends up in power.

CAIRO — Internet service was disrupted in Egypt early Friday as cell phone text messaging appeared to be down, hours before activists who used both to organize large anti-government protests planned further actions.
The interior ministry had said in a statement late Thursday it would take "decisive measures" against dissidents who planned protests after Friday noon prayers, saying the activists "sent messages to citizens to gather in a number of mosques in the provinces during Friday prayers."
Tens of thousands protested around the country on Tuesday in the largest anti-government demonstrations in decades.
The protests continued on Wednesday and Thursday, killing five demonstrators and two policemen in clashes.
Mobile phone services went down on Tuesday in a downtown Cairo area where most of the protesters were gathered, and the social networking site Twitter said its services were also blocked that day.
In Cairo, internet users said they could not access the web, with some saying access was slow and intermittent, starting late Thursday. Text messaging was also unavailable.
