Every year, approximately 73 million sharks are caught for their fins to feed the growing worldwide demand for shark fin soup. This inhumane practice is pushing many species to the brink of extinction and is changing ecosystems throughout the world's oceans.
As predators, sharks are important to healthy oceans and help balance marine ecosystems. But global demand for shark fin soup has pushed several shark populations to the brink of collapse. And each year, millions of sharks are brutally killed just for their fins.
Now, the Senate is poised to take action on the Shark Conservation Act that would protect them by ending shark finning in US waters.
Shark finning is the cruel and wasteful practice of hacking off fins from live sharks, tossing the dead or dying animal overboard. Not only is this inhumane, but it also complicates fishery management since differentiating shark species is difficult once fins are removed.
The Shark Conservation Act would end this horrible practice in US waters and improve shark fishery management and conservation efforts.
