 THIS is the bomb, the second atomic bomb, after killing tens of thousands of civilians in Nagasaki, that forced emperor hirohito to realize he had to surrender to the allies or Japan would be totally destroyed. America is still condemned by many for unleashing atomic weapons on Japanese civilians, these same people see to have forgotten the Rape of Nanjing (Nanking) by Japanese troops that started on 13 DEC 1937, lasted for six weeks and killed at least 200,000 Chinese civilians. Reminding the world of the Rape of Nanjing is not justifying the use of atomic weapons, it is reminding the world Japanese civilians were not the only victims of WWII.

TENS of thousands of Japanese were killed in the blink of an eye because emperor hirohito decided they were expendable in the war Japan was already loosing. Too often America is portrayed as the murderous aggressor for dropping the atomic bomb when in fact the indifference of  hirohito for the welfare of his people brought death to Hiroshima.

July 21, 2023 The devastating repercussions within our post-Roe landscape continue apace. Celeste Burgess, the Nebraska teenager who pleaded guilty to using abortion pills in order to end a pregnancy, has been sentenced to 90 days in jail, my colleague Madison Pauly reports. As Madison writes, the case drew national attention for its clear-cut demonstration of how overzealous prosecutors "could and would go after abortion seekers and those who support them" after the Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to an abortion last year. I expect you are already horrified by this news. But I still want to turn your attention to the following exchange during Thursday's proceedings between Burgess and the presiding judge, Seventh Judicial District Court Judge James Kube, as reported in Courthouse News: “Explain to me why, after the baby was aborted, that you buried the baby and then eventually exhumed the baby, burned its body and then reburied it," Kube said. "Tell me why you did that.” “I was honestly scared and didn’t know what to do," said Burgess, who wore a black long- sleeve shirt with narrow dark gray horizontal stripes black slacks and black boots. “I wanted to do the right thing but I didn’t know what I was doing at the time wasn't the right thing. I do regret my decisions, very much” A moment later, Kube asked: “Didn’t you think it was appropriate to have the baby buried or cremated in a normal fashion?” “Financial wise it has not always been the best with my family," Burgess replied. "I didn’t know exactly how much it would be.” It's hard not to see the terrible disrespect, shame, and utter ridicule in the way this judge treats Burgess—and it makes me downright livid. But it's essential to also understand that men like Kube are everywhere, determined to humiliate women for trying to take control of their lives in a landscape that doesn't want them to succeed. As for Burgess' mother, who helped obtain the pills and pleaded guilty to providing an abortion after 20 weeks gestation, she will be sentenced in September. —Inae Oh

July 14, 2023 After somewhat of a quiet news week, it pains me to report that I'm still stuck on the thunderous fart that wrecked a Robert F. Kennedy Jr. event in New York. But who could blame me? The story has it all: gossip, irresistible quotes, and a real-life Kennedy, who, according to the New York Post, remained stoic amid the fracas. That's quite impressive for a man who otherwise does a fine job embarrassing himself all on his own. But Kennedy is far from alone in the apparent quest to humiliate themselves lately. Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg want a literal cage match. Chris Christie is managing to keep himself relevant in the Republican presidential field with quotes like, "I'd kick his ass." Meanwhile, the top candidate in that cursed field, Donald Trump, is reportedly planning to appear on more outlets that center around "combat sporting events" in order to appeal to the Barstool crowd. And perhaps the most anger-inducing for your newsletter writer, the father of Keke Palmer's kid—hopefully now an ex—had the nerve to publicly shame her over an outfit while dancing with Usher. The common denominator here is not hard to detect; the emphasis on traditional masculinity is in fact glaring. But even as my eyes roll, I can't help but also wonder if these antics appeal to the average dude. Your boyfriend, colleague, brother. If they do, then is the natural next step something that mirrors the hate on the far-right? I can't say. But the summer of men embarrassing themselves appears intent to rage on.
