Virginia ranks as least safe state during COVID-19, study finds

As the United States is working to prevent the spread of COVID-19, a new study has ranked Virginia among the least safe states to be in during the pandemic.

The WalletHub study ranked the Commonwealth in fifty-first place when it comes to how well the state has handled the pandemic and how many people are being vaccinated.

WalletHub compared all 50 states and the District of Columbia across five key metrics: rates of COVID-19 transmission and the share of the eligible population getting the vaccine, as well as the rate of positivity, hospitalizations and deaths between February 24 and March 2 of this year. Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing the safest conditions. The methodology gave a double weight to the vaccination rate, and a triple weight to the death rate.

Overall, the study shows that Virginia placed:

  • 23 in vaccination rates
  • 34 in positive testing rates
  • 39 in hospitalization rates
  • 51 in death rates

Dr. Danny Avula with the Virginia Dept. of Health said Wednesday that the state is still processing death certificates related to the post-holiday surge in COVID-19 cases in the Commmonwealth; the delayed reporting is leading to a larger number of deaths appearing in recent VDH reports.

The study shows Virginia lags behind 22 other states in how many people are being vaccinated.

“Virginia lags behind 22 other states when it comes to the share of the population age 16 and over who have received at least the first dose of the vaccine,” said Jill Gonzalez, WalletHub analyst. “Increasing the number of people vaccinated is essential for getting control of the pandemic.”

However, according to health officials, Virginia climbed up the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's rankings of states with the highest rate of COVID-19 vaccine delivery in early February. According to the CDC website, Virginia has administered a total of 2,122,323 vaccines.

According to WalletHub, only 7.9% of the American population has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 so far.

“The sooner people can get completely vaccinated, the safer our communities will be and the sooner they can fully reopen. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine should speed up that process," Gonzalez said.

Alaska ranked "safest" on the study, followed by Hawaii in second and North Dakota in third. The rankings are based on data available as of 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
