Is Trump Compromised by Saudi Money? DOES A BEAR SHIT IN THE WOODS? 26NOV18

Image result for trump pence greed
TO be fair to The Atlantic I added the second part of the title of this post. The fact is NOT MY pres drumpf / trump, in fact the entire drumpf / trump-pence administration with the republican / gop-greed over people controlled congress has been one of the most corrupt and greediest in decades. It isn't just the saudis and russians who have a financial hold on the drumpf / trump-pence and republican cabal, anyone who can be considered part of the 1% can buy into this cabal. When dealing with NOT MY pres drumpf / trump, NOT MY vp pence, and the republican / gop-greed over people cabal keep in mind morals are not  required, just millions, billions of dollars.

Is Trump Compromised by Saudi Money?
The incoming chairman of the House Intelligence Committee wants to know, saying the president hasn’t been honest in accepting Saudi denials in the Khashoggi murder.

On Thanksgiving Day, President Donald Trump once again touted the Saudi royal family’s denial of any role in the murder of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi. That didn’t sit well with Representative Adam Schiff, the California Democrat poised to take over the House Intelligence Committee.
“The president is not being honest with the country about the murder of Jamal Khashoggi,” Schiff said Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union, having promised to use his new authority to investigate whether Trump’s personal finances influence his foreign policy. “Is his personal financial interest driving U.S. policy in the Gulf? … Are there financial entanglements with the Gulf? Are there financial inducements that the president has not to want to cross the Saudis?”
Although Trump tweeted last month that he has “no financial interests in Saudi Arabia,” he has in the past acknowledged business ties with the kingdom. “Saudi Arabia, I like the Saudis,” he said at a July 2015 campaign rally. “I make a lot of money with them. They buy all sorts of my stuff. All kinds of toys from Trump. They pay me millions and hundreds of millions.” The Associated Press reported that in the 1990s, when Trump was “teetering on personal bankruptcy and scrambling to raise cash,” a billionaire Saudi prince twice closed on multimillion-dollar deals, including one to buy a 282-foot yacht called Princess. More recent business comes through Saudi stays at Trump hotels during his presidency, though PolitiFact reports that the Trump Organization doesn’t appear to own property or invest in the kingdom.
These concerns about Trump’s financial entanglements with Saudi Arabia parallel suspicions about possible financial connections to Russia, which Schiff also promised to investigate, including “whether the Russians have been laundering money through the president’s businesses, and this is the financial hold that the Russians may have. It would certainly explain the otherwise bewildering conduct of the president in Helsinki, many of the president’s pro-Putin comments. It would explain why his sons have said at various times they don’t need money from U.S. banks—they get all the money they need from Russia.”
Schiff, whom Trump called “little Adam Schitt” in a tweet last week, apparently is laying the groundwork to dig into the president’s personal finances more than any other investigator. When the Democrats take control of the House in January, he’ll gain control of the Intelligence Committee’s subpoena power and majority staff. The Daily Beast reported a few days ago that the committee has created positions for “money-laundering and forensic accounting experts.”
Some GOP senators joined Schiff and the Democrats in rejecting Trump’s meek acceptance of Saudi denials as they pressed for tougher punishment.
“I disagree with the president’s assessment. It’s inconsistent with the intelligence I’ve seen,” said Senator Mike Lee, the libertarian-leaning Utahan who was the only non-judge on the president’s short list for the Supreme Court. On NBC’s Meet the Press, the host, Chuck Todd, asked whether Lee supported congressional investigations into Trump’s motive for accepting Saudi denials.
“Look, I don’t know why he’s siding with the Saudis … (But I’m) certain that in the next Congress, people will look into that.” The GOP senator argued for cutting U.S. support for the Saudis’ devastating war in Yemen, pointing to his collaboration with Bernie Sanders on that issue.
Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa, elected this month to the No. 5 GOP leadership spot, expressed a quieter objection. “I do think we need to look into this further,” she said on CNN’s State of the Union. She highlighted the importance of a strong U.S. ally in the Middle East but added, “We also are a very strong nation when it comes to human rights, when it comes to the rule of law. And if there are indicators that the prince was involved in this murder, then we need to absolutely consider further action.”
Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse, a frequent Trump critic whom Senator Jeff Flake of Arizona floated as a 2020 primary challenger, said on Fox News Sunday that the president’s statement was “very weak.” Sasse acknowledged the realpolitik case for a tight alliance with the Saudis and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, known as MbS. But then he said, “Making the realist case is a different thing than being so weak that we failed to tell the truth. MbS contributed to murdering somebody abroad, and it is not strength to sort of mumble past that. Strength is telling the truth even when it’s hard.”
After a Thanksgiving Day teleconference with U.S. troops around the world, President Trump took questions from reporters, who asked about the American response to Khashoggi’s murder last month at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. Although the CIA has concluded with high confidence that MbS ordered the killing, according to a Washington Post report, Trump once again emphasized the vehemence of the royal family’s denials and said that “the CIA points it both ways.”
So, a reporter asked, “who should be held accountable?” The president’s response did not identify any other Saudi officials, military cooperation, arms sales, official visits, or support for the war in Yemen. Instead, Trump seemed to blame universal human depravity.
“Maybe the world should be held accountable, because the world is a vicious place,” Trump said. “The world is a very, very vicious place. If you look at what’s happening in China, if you look at what’s happening in so many different countries—I could name many countries. If you look at what’s happening with terrorism all over the world.”
So as Schiff lays the groundwork to investigate Trump’s ties to the Saudis and the Russians, it seems that, beyond the sanctions levied against 15 to 20 agents and officials directly involved in Khashoggi’s killing, the Trump administration is not likely to hold MbS or Saudi Arabia responsible for ordering the murder.

I love trains, always have. I have taken train tips in the U.S. and Germany and I think one of the dumbest things this country ever did was abandon passenger trains for the Interstate Highway System. Even the freight rail system we have is just a little better than third world systems. Here is a beautifully produced video on what really may be the most extreme railway in the world, from the Atlantic.....

The Most Extreme Railway in the World

The Most Extreme Railway in the World

At 430 miles long, the formidable Mauritania Railway, nicknamed the “backbone of the Sahara,” boasts some of the longest and heaviest trains in the world. Its journey begins in Zouerat, Mauritania, where 22,000 tons of iron ore are mined daily and transported across the searing desert to the port city of Nouadhibou, on Africa’s Atlantic coast. Sometimes the train also carries passengers—merchants who travel illegally atop the train to transport food and supplies to remote Saharan communities. The ride is treacherous. Many die en route.

Malick, a 27-year-old merchant, takes his chances. He relies on the train for his livelihood, as do the many people who live along the train’s route. Miguel de Olaso and his four-person camera crew, disguised as fellow merchants, made the 30-hour trip with Malick in the train’s open-top wagons. The resulting short documentary is a deeply immersive, cinematic glimpse into a way of life that exists nowhere else in the world.

“If the train goes through a sandstorm, you feel like you want to die,” de Olaso told The Atlantic. “All you can do is just close your eyes and let it pass.”

The train ride was so unbearable that de Olaso vowed never to return. But he was moved to come back time after time to film the resilience he saw in the Mauritanian merchants, whose grueling journey plays out against the backdrop of one of the Earth’s greatest and most unforgiving vistas.

LAZY BOY

IF GUNS WERE AS REGULATED AS CARS

THIS really is a good point and I doubt it could be overturned in court, but it is doubtful there are enough politicians brave enough to even introduce, let alone support for and vote for this kind on common sense gun control.

Prescription for Poverty Drug companies as tax dodgers, price gougers, and influence peddlers 23NOV18

Image result for oxfam logo
THANKS to Oxfam we are reminded the pharmaceutical industry is only interested in their profit margins and not in meeting their obligations to the American social contract or to the greater good of any society / country they are operating in. The drumpf / trump-pence administration has promised to take action to force the drug companies to lower the prices on their products but that was just political propaganda. drumpf / trump-pence and the republican / gop-greed over people party continue to protect the greed of these companies, increasing their profit margins. Please click the link to sign Oxfam's petition to johnson & johnson demanding they honor their promise to pay their fair share of taxes in America and around the world.....

I have a two year old daughter. Every night we go through the same routine, dinner, bath-time, stories, and then bedtime. If you have young kids you’ll recognize this beautiful struggle. You might even use the same bath-time products we do- Johnson & Johnson baby soap, maybe you even remember their tagline: “no more tears”.

No more tears? It’s a lie. The truth, based on shocking new research from Oxfam, is that Johnson & Johnson is hiding a dirty little secret: they’re cheating taxpayers out of billions of dollars that should be going towards providing healthcare, schools and basic services to children here in the US and around the world.

Sign the petition to demand that Johnson & Johnson pay their fair share.

Johnson & Johnson presents itself as a responsible, law-abiding family company. But behind closed doors they're doing everything they can to dodge billions of dollars in taxes. While their executives cash big checks, millions of children don’t even have access to basic healthcare. That’s not responsible behavior, that’s a scam.

But we can do something about it. Johnson & Johnson has already signed a corporate credo committing to pay their fair share of taxes; as consumers we have the power to demand that they live up to their promises.

Will you raise your voice with me?

Please sign this petition so we can deliver your voice and demand that Johnson & Johnson pay what they really owe!

Prescription for Poverty

Drug companies as tax dodgers, price gougers, and influence peddlers
New Oxfam research shows that four pharmaceutical corporations—Abbott, Johnson & Johnson, Merck & CO (MSD), and Pfizer—systematically stash their profits in overseas tax havens. They appear to deprive developing countries of more than $100 million every year—money that is urgently needed to meet the health needs of people in these countries—while vastly overcharging for their products. And these corporations deploy massive influencing operations to rig the rules in their favor and give their damaging behavior a veneer of legitimacy. Tax dodging, high prices, and influence peddling by drug companies exacerbate the yawning gap between rich and poor, between men and women, and between advanced economies and developing ones.

FOSSIL FREE NEWS FROM 350.0RG 19NOV18

IN spite of the drumpf / trump-pence administration and the republican / gop-greed over people actions are being taken to address climate change around the world......
Fossil Free Digest

I've got a lot of feelings right now. If you've followed Fossil Free News for a while, you know I live in Paris – but I'm from southern California. My friends and family have been evacuated and personally affected by what's now the deadliest fire in state history – a fire that's fueled by record temperatures, drought, and the fossil fuel industry.
Scientists, high-profile energy think tank heads – it seems like these days EVERYONE is agreeing we have to go Fossil Free right now. I've got hope we'll get there. From strategically timed marches all over the world, to the young people in the US pushing for a Green New Deal, to people in the Philippines bringing renewable solutions to natural disasters straight to communities –  there's so much happening in our global movement right now to stop this.

And now, you can watch all the highlights! Today we're introducing video versions of Fossil Free News. Share this new video on social media to get more people looped in to the climate movement.

-Nicole

In Taiwana series of 3 marches is underway across the country ahead of elections. Protesters were contesting the placement of a new gas import terminal, and symbolically showing that upcoming votes hinge on where politicians land on the energy transition and air pollution. Keep an eye out for the last one in Taiwan on Saturday, November 18. You can also meet some young leaders of the climate movement in East Asia, who got together for a climate leadership camp in Thailand.

It's been a big two weeks for youth climate leadership. Inspired by the actions of 15 year-old Greta Thunberg from Sweden, students in tens of cities across Australiahave organized a School Strike 4 Climate to send a message that their present and future is at stake – and since they can't vote, they'll strike instead. And they weren't alone. In the United States, just a week after contested mid-term elections, youth from the Sunrise Movement occupied Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's office, demanding she take a genuine hard line on climate as the country's most populous state burned. They were joined by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, now the youngest-ever woman in the US Congress. With new climate hawks taking office around the country, real pressure is building for a Green New Deal.

November 8 was the fifth anniversary of the worst storm to ever hit the Philippines, Typhoon Haiyan. In a country still reeling from Typhoon Manghkut back in September, brave individuals are putting forward positive solutions. Watch this videoshowing how TekPak solar-powered technology is helping meet the country's energy needs and providing a resilient solution to disaster relief.

Days of action for the climate don't seem to be slowing down. In Dhaka, London, Toronto, and other cities, people stood in coordinated solidarity with the Sundarbans, a giant wetland region in Bangladesh that is home to half a million people and directly threatened by a planned coal-burning power station, Rampal. Also last weekend, Montreal saw its biggest climate march, 50,000 people(!), since the historic march on Earth Day in 2012.  And in Barcelona a climate march brought colorful and inspiring imagery to demand the end of fossil fuels. Just days later, Spain's social democratic government set out a new plan to go 100% renewable by 2050, support a just transition for fossil fuel workers, and ban new fossil fuel permits.

Ever wondered how to shift your campaign into another gear when you hit a wall with your demands? This great case study from European Changemakers follows the experiences of Guy from Fossil Free Upssala in Sweden. He tells the story of how the group escalated their campaign and used a combination of creative and digital tactics to get major attention at a prestigious annual gala event. You can browse their site for more videos and loads of other useful campaigning tools and resources.

It's been a while since we put a podcast in the corner. But I couldn't resist this one from Fossil Free GlasgowGlasgow University was the first university in Europe to divest and inspired over 60 other UK universities to follow suit.  After their historic win, Glasgow students decided to go after the city's large pension fund. My favorite part was hearing how everyone got involved in the movement – including via Tinder in one person's case!

What do you think about Spain's plan to go 100% RE by 2050? Join the conversation that's already started on the comments in this Facebook post. Or, if you're not on Facebook, you can send me a voice memo with your ideas to ffdigest@350.org or tweet @gofossilfree.
