Tell President Obama not to reward Syria's #1 supporter, NO TRADE BENEFITS FOR RUSSIA 7DEZ12

Fresh off a victory in the US Congress which voted to end all dealings with rosoboronexport, the Russian arms supplier to the Syrian government, United To End Genocide has launched another campaign for the US government to deny Russia trade benefits as long as the Russian government and business community continues to support assad. Don't Reward Syria
Tell Obama not to reward the #1 supporter of the murderous Syrian regime--Veto trade benefits for Russia

Take Action

The situation in Syria is grave. Fears of the use of chemical weapons by Syrian President Assad reached new heights this week. The UN is pulling more than 1,000 staffers from Syria due to intensified fighting near the capital. Additionally, a 48-hour Internet blackout has made communications with critical staff impossible.

For nearly two years, Russia has blocked action to save innocent lives in Syria, even as it remains the main weapons supplier to the Syrian regime. And now President Obama is posed to lift Russian trade restrictions that have been in place for 40 years. Tell Obama not to reward Syria’s #1 supporter—Veto trade benefits for Russia.

Now is the time for the United States to be using all of its diplomatic muscle to pressure Russia to stop blocking action that could save innocent lives in Syria. Demand that the U.S. stand up to Russia and keep trade restrictions in place.

Russia’s support for Syria has been most visible at the United Nations where they have vetoed three resolutions supporting a peace plan. But Russia’s support behind closed doors for Syria is even worse.

Over the summer, a Syrian government plane returned home from Russia with 200 tons of “bank notes,” providing Syria with valuable currency as the United States and others imposed trade sanctions, crippling the Syrian economy. And Russian arms companies are supplying the Assad regime with attack helicopters, advanced defensive missile systems and munitions.

Fueled by these weapons and diplomatic inaction caused by Russia, the conflict in Syria has claimed an estimated 40,000 civilian lives. And Assad’s actions over the past two weeks indicate the situation is posed to escalate.

Trade with Russia is expected to double if Obama doesn’t take action—providing an economic boost to a nation fueling the deadly conflict in Syria.

Two weeks ago, we won an important victory as the U.S. House and Senate voted to cut U.S. ties with Rosoboronexport—the Russian weapons company supplying Syria with arms. We need to build upon this by not only targeting weapons dealers, but anyone who is providing cover to Assad’s murderous regime.

Ask President Obama to stand with the Syrian people by sending Russia a strong message that those supporting the Assad regime will not be given economic rewards.

Sincerely,

Tom Andrews
President
