Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani was convicted in May 2006 of having an “illicit relationship” with two men and received 99 lashes as her sentence. Despite this, she was then also convicted of “adultery while being married”, which she has denied, and sentenced to death by stoning.
Following an international outcry against her possible execution, the Iranian Embassy in London issued a statement on 8 July 2010 which said that Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani would not be executed by stoning.
However, her precise legal status is unclear. This month, she appeared to implicate herself in the murder of her husband in a TV “confession”.
Amnesty International continues to have serious concerns about the fate of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani.
There is no certainty that she has definitely been spared from stoning. She also could face execution by hanging, perhaps due to her alleged involvement in her husband’s murder.
Amnesty International has called on Iran’s Head of the Judiciary to halt the execution. Join the call by signing to up the following action on Amnesty International USA’s website.
