BOYSKO & KEMP ON TRANSPORTATION AND EDUCATION 7FEB13

COMMENTARY from the two Progressive Democratic candidates on the recent vote in Richmond on transportation and education funding.

You may not have heard, today the General Assembly voted on quite the scheme to fund transportation by diverting millions of dollars from our schools and healthcare system.  This cannot stand.  We can't let them pull a fast one on us and rob Peter to pay Paul.
Stand with me for change!  Contribute $5 or more right now.  Let’s work together for NOVA’s fair share of transportation funds and fiscally responsible solutions.  We cannot shortchange our children and most vulnerable residents.
One of the reasons I decided to run for the 86th District in the House of Delegates is because I have spent the past five years at the table identifying and planning the best land use and transportation solutions for our two proposed metro stations - Herndon and Innovation Center.  I understand the potential economic benefits this opportunity brings to us and to our community.  But also in my role for the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors I worked on issues relating to schools and human services.  Furthermore, as mom of two teenage daughters and PTSA member I know how important  it is to preserve those funds designated for these vital programs.
Do we have to trade our kids' well being for better roads?  NO!
We can do better. The 86th District needs a delegate who will fight for us, not  just follow suit with the governor's political gymmicks.
Stand with me for change!  Contribute $5 or more right now.  Let’s work together for NOVA’s fair share of transportation funds and fiscally responsible solutions that will not leave our children holding an empty purse.
Kind regards,
Jennifer

Republicans: Playing small ball with our great Northern Virginia economy

Killing the Golden Goose

Why are Commonwealth Republicans stalling the very economic engine that will sustain our future?

Many of you have heard me say that every election is about the future.  We envision a future that we want for ourselves and our children and we look for the leaders that can help take us there.  But reaching that future requires us to focus on the big issues.

In last Sunday’s Washington Post, an article by Peter Munson captured the importance of maintaining and pursuing a positive and expansive outlook on the future.

Regaining Our Positive Vision of the Future
As a Marine returning from war, he felt that he had come back to an America that had become more introspective, more concerned about security and stability than in pursuing the creative impulses that made us a great nation.  He lamented the fact that the nation seemed to be unable to come to agreement even on the need to invest in some of the most fundamental needs in our country, including infrastructure and education.   He urged us to regain our positive vision of the future, to “…exalt those who create value in our society: parents, teachers, workers, builders, entrepreneurs, innovators.”

Despite being the eighth wealthiest state in the nation, Virginia ranks 29th in teacher pay, 38th in state per-pupil funding, and earned a grade of C in public education funding from Quality Counts.

Not Cannibalizing Our Future
Our transportation system is under-funded by a billion dollars annually, yet our governor proposed a transportation plan that fails to cover the cost of putting our transportation plan back on track.
Moreover, the budget he proposed depends in part on taking $250 million from our already under-funded education system.

That budget cleared the House on Tuesday but in the Senate, State Senator Steve D. Newman has proposed an even more anemic transportation budget, which Mr. Cuccinelli has endorsed.  These actions represent the type of timid, short term thinking that we can no longer afford.

We need to focus on the big issues, the big ideas, and work hard to send progressives to Richmond to restore the kind of positive, creative spirit that we need to build a better future for ourselves and our children.

Focusing On What Matters
Our Nation and our Commonwealth are not great simply because we say they are — they are great to the extent that we work and invest and make them so.  In the words of Harry S. Truman:

“America was not built on fear.  America was built on courage, on imagination and an unbeatable determination to do the job at hand.”

It’s time to get the job done.  I need your support to get to Richmond to work these issues on your behalf.

We need both donations and volunteers.
