10 Charities Overpaying their For-Profit Fundraisers & Charity Navigator Announces New Rating Dimension 6FEB13

CHARITY NAVIGATOR is a charity ranking website. It is a very useful tool to help you make sure your donation is going to do the work you want it to. I use it all the time, and have not donated to, or stopped donating to charities with low ratings. Here are the top 10 charities that spend way more on their professional paid fundraisers than on the actual charity programs, followed by the Charity Navigator newsletter for FEB 2013.....

10 Charities Overpaying their For-Profit Fundraisers

These 10 charities are not living up to their missions. Each spends more than 50% of its budget paying for-profit fundraising professionals to solicit your hard-earned money. They are ranked by the percentage of their total functional expenses spent on professional fundraising fees. As a result, very little of the charity's spending is directed towards its programs and services.

2013 Brings More Ratings and Expanded Methodology

To help you step off on the right foot with your 2013 philanthropic endeavors, our analysts have updated 449 charity ratings. Additionally, thanks to an ongoing support from the Hobbs Foundation, we added 20 new charities serving the needs of children in the South. And we didn't just add new data and new charities, we also revealed our new Results Reporting methodology.

President & CEO's Report
The First Step Toward a Measure of Outcome

On December 8, 2008 I posted a blog on Ken's Commentary titled, "A Measure of Outcome". In that blog entry I discussed the critical importance of knowing the outcomes of the work of charities and made the following promise, "we are setting a goal over time of offering an expanded rating system to more comprehensively evaluate nonprofits and separate great organizations from the rest". Over the intervening years we have been working hard to do just that. The launch of CN 2.0 in 2011 was a step in that direction. However, on January 23, 2013 we took our greatest leap forward in that effort. We launched the new Results Reporting dimension to our evaluation of charities (the overall system is now called CN 3.0 and includes three dimensions - (1) financial health, (2) accountability & transparency, and (3) results reporting).
