(7)  (19) Michael Phelps leaves London with 18 gold medals and a record 22 total medals. He says that his plans for life after the Olympics include visiting some of the cities he's competed in — but outside the bubble of swim meets, for a change.

August 11, 2012 Mexico shocked Brazil in Olympic men's soccer, winning gold in a 2-1 game in which it never trailed. Mexico's Oribe Peralta scored just 29 seconds into the game, after pouncing on a turnover by to take early control of the match at London's Wembley Stadium.

August 10, 2012 The Bahamas men's team has won the 4x400m relay, edging past a surprisingly quick U.S. team to take the gold medal. It was the first gold medal for any male athlete from the Bahamas. The quartet ran a time of 2:56.72, setting a national record. The U.S. set a season best of 2:57.05 to take silver.

Year Of The Woman At The London Games? For Americans, It's True(32)  (20)

The U.S. women's soccer team won gold Thursday, in a victory that also kept the American women far ahead of the men in the number of medals won at the London Games: 100 to 59.
August 10, 2012 Every nation that sent a delegation to the London Games sent at least one female athlete — a first for the Olympics. This year's Team USA has more female than male athletes — and the women have won nearly twice as many medals as the men: 100 total medals, by my count, to 59 for the men.

Shiming Zou of China is declared the winner over Paddy Barnes of Ireland during their men's light flyweight boxing semifinal in London. The match was scored a 15-15 tie; Zou won on the number of punches landed.
August 10, 2012 Olympic boxing seems to know that its scoring is weird, its fan base eroding, and its status as an Olympic sport is coming into question. They can address some of those problems by using stronger math to decide who wins close bouts.
