A judo judge waves a blue flag to award victory to South Korea's Cho Jun-Ho Sunday. But moments later, judges raised white flags instead, giving the win to Masashi Ebinuma of Japan.
The result of a judo men's quarterfinal bout was announced, and then reversed, Sunday. Since then, it became the source of international indignation over a perceived injustice. But the controversy stems from judo officials' attempt to avoid such confusion.

After German Uwe Hohn threw his javelin nearly out of the stadium in 1984, a move that spooked officials with its potential deadliness, the flying spears were changed to fly shorter. But people have been throwing sticks for 400,000 years, and some of these ancient spears might have been able to fly far farther than modern javelins.

Australia's Jamie Dwyer, who scored three goals against South Africa in field hockey Monday, goes horizontal in London's Riverbank Arena. The South African goalie matched Dwyer's strategy, but Australia won, 6-0.
Swimming is again the big draw in the London 2012 Olympics Monday, with four gold-medal races scheduled. Olympic competitions are being held in 22 sports today — meaning there are dozens of events. Below, we list the ones we'll be keeping a close eye on.

American Dana Vollmer blew away the field, winning gold and setting a record in the 100-meter butterfly. Her teammates in the men's 4-by-100-meter freestyle relay fell short in the final stretch, winning silver. And the crowd went wild for English superstar Rebecca Adlington's finish in the 400-meter free — good for bronze.

July 28, 2012 The first full day of Olympic competition brought moments of tense excitement, in the pool and on the archery course, among other places. But it's also time to look ahead to Sunday, which promises a day for swimming, as well as women's gymnastics, which begins qualifying rounds.

July 28, 2012 American swimmer Ryan Lochte won the gold medal in the men's 400-meter individual medley Saturday, beating Michael Phelps and the rest of a talented field at the London 2012 Olympics.

Silver medalists Brady Ellison, Jake Kaminski and Jacob Wukie of the United States, gold medalists Michele Frangilli, Marco Galiazzo and Mauro Nespoli of Italy, and bronze medalists Kim Bub-min, Im Dong-hyun and Oh Jin-hyek of South Korea stand with their medals after the men's team archery event.
July 28, 2012 Ryan Lochte won the first U.S. gold at the London Games, in the 400m individual medley. And on the first day of full competition in the 2012 Summer Olympics, the U.S. men's archery team won a silver medal, after a tense final with Italy.
